7-Day Crete Road Trip:
Chania to Agios Nikolaos and Back

By WanderVans Crete · February 2025 · 12 min read

Crete is big. At 260km from west to east, it rewards those who give it time. This 7-day loop covers the essential highlights — from the White Mountains and the Samaria Gorge in the west to the Minoan ruins and Spinalonga island in the east — while leaving room to slow down, swim, and eat well. Best done in a camper van.

💡 Best time: May, June, September and October. July–August is beautiful but hot and busy. March–April is green and quiet, with wildflowers everywhere.

The Route at a Glance

Chania → Elafonissi → Sougia → Sfakia → Rethymnon → Heraklion → Lasithi → Agios Nikolaos → return

Total driving: approximately 450km over 7 days. Never more than 80km in a single day — this is not a race.

Day 1
Chania — Pick Up & First Night
Pick up your van from Chania. Spend the afternoon in the old harbour — lunch at a seafood taverna, walk the Venetian lighthouse, explore the narrow streets of Splantzia. Drive 45 minutes west to Camping Nopigia for your first night by the sea.

Day 2
Elafonissi & Falasarna
Drive to Elafonissi — Europe's pink-sand beach. Arrive early before the day-trippers. Swim in the shallow lagoon and walk the small island. In the afternoon, head north to Falasarna for sunset over the Aegean. Sleep in the car park above the beach.

Day 3
Samaria Gorge
Drive up to Omalos plateau and walk the 16km Samaria Gorge — Europe's longest, finishing at the village of Agia Roumeli on the Libyan Sea. Take the ferry to Chora Sfakion and sleep there. Book the gorge walk the day before in summer — it's worth it.

Day 4
Preveli & South Coast
Drive east along the dramatic south coast. Stop at Preveli Beach — walk 20 minutes down to the palm forest and freshwater lagoon. Continue to Agio Pavlos for the night — sand dunes, empty beach, one excellent fish taverna.

Day 5
Rethymnon & Heraklion
Drive north to Rethymnon — one of Crete's most elegant towns, with a Venetian fortress and a beautifully preserved old city. Afternoon in Heraklion and a visit to Knossos Palace, the largest Bronze Age archaeological site in the Aegean. Stay at Camping Creta outside Heraklion.

Day 6
Lasithi Plateau & Agios Nikolaos
Drive up to the Lasithi Plateau at 840m altitude — a hidden flat valley surrounded by mountains, covered in windmills and apple orchards. Visit the Dikteon Cave where Zeus was supposedly born. Descend to Agios Nikolaos on the east coast for the final night — cocktails by the lake.

Day 7
Return to Chania

Practical tips

Fuel: Fill up in towns — petrol stations are rare on the south coast. The van has good range and the solar panel keeps everything else running.

Food: Cook breakfast in the van (the kitchen is excellent). Eat lunch at village cafes. Save budget for proper taverna dinners — Cretan food is extraordinary.

Roads: Many south coast roads are narrow but perfectly drivable. The Peugeot Rifter handles them easily. Take your time.

Swimming: Bring snorkelling gear. Crete's waters are some of the clearest in the Mediterranean.
